Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring acid that treats acne, rosacea, and dark spots by killing acne-causing bacteria, calming inflammation, and blocking the enzyme that overproduces pigment — but the FDA has approved only one topical formulation, a 15% gel called Finacea, and only for the inflammatory bumps of rosacea, not for acne or hyperpigmentation specifically.

What Is Azelaic Acid, Exactly?

Does the Prescription Version Actually Work, According to Trials?

The clinical trials behind Finacea's FDA approval enrolled 788 subjects who applied the 15% gel twice daily for 12 to 15 weeks, according to the FDA's approved prescribing information cited above. The most common side effect was burning, stinging, or tingling, reported by 29% of users.
