Blue Water Film Festival announces its honorees and film line-up taking place June 8th – 11th, 2023, in celebration of UN – World Oceans Day

Yvon Chouinard to receive Global Guardian Award

San Diego, California – The 2023 Blue Water Film Festival (BWFF) presented by the Blue Water Institute announces its honorees and film lineup for its 4th Annual Blue Water Film Festival, taking place June 8th – 11th, 2023 in celebration of United Nations World Oceans Day. The event will feature a total of 35 films; 12 feature films, 19 shorts, and 4 animated short films.

GLOBAL GUARDIAN AWARD

Yvon Chouinard will receive the Global Guardian Award, which is presented to an industry leader whose contributions to the protection of the natural laws of the environment and the world and has changed the industry for the better. The award will be presented online on Sunday, June 11th, as part of the Blue Water Awards show.

FEATURED FILMS

BWFF kicks off on June 8th with the opening night screening of Matthew Mishory’s WHO ARE THE MARCUSES?, presented by the Israeli Consulate at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park. The festival will also showcase a National Geographic feature documentary, BOBI WINE: THE PEOPLE’S PRESIDENT, and a Patagonia feature film, CORAZÓN SALADO. The centerpiece presentation will be the feature documentary, PATRICK AND THE WHALE directed by Mark Fletcher. The festival will close with the Australian feature film, BLUEBACK, directed by Robert Connolly.

The feature, shorts and animated films will screen at the La Paloma Theater in Encinitas, Digital Gym at UCSD Park & Market Street, Museum of Photography (MOPA) in Balboa Park and virtually at Blue Water Streaming.

The Blue Water Film Institute supports the Blue Water Film Festival as an emerging festival whose intention is to bring greater awareness to and engagement for our big blue planet’s precious life supply of water—our oceans, aquifers, rivers, dams, lakes, streams, and waterway systems through cinema and engagement. BWFF, known for its environmental programming, works to provide opportunities for support and mentorship of the emerging voices of up-and coming environmental filmmakers. It is quickly becoming known as the festival for Environmental Filmmakers; a boutique event beloved by conscious and environmental film fans and auteurs alike. Over 80% of the films in the 2023 BWFF slate will have filmmakers in attendance and online participating in Q&As following the screenings.
