LEWES, DE, UNITED STATES, May 2, 2023/EINPresswire.com/ — Delaware author Dana Ravyn has a new novel, and she’s donating all her 2023 royalties to The Trevor Project, the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning) young people.

According to Ravyn, “Suicide among LGBTQ youth is a tragic problem across the US. These kids face a lot of challenges.” A Trevor Project national survey found that 41% of LGBTQ youth had seriously considered attempting suicide in 2022.[1] Recently, a peer-reviewed study found that 56% of transgender youth have attempted suicide at least once.[2] “I want to support the volunteers at The Trevor Project who are there for youth in crisis,” Ravyn said.

Ravyn’s second novel, The Suicide Switch, is a tale of medical research into suicide gone awry. A central character is a doctor whose research is driven by the tragic loss of his teenage son to suicide. Once a suicide prevention counselor herself, Ravyn says that much about LGBTQ kids’ risk is misunderstood. “Sexual orientation or gender identity doesn’t make LGBTQ youth inherently prone to suicide,” she said, “they are at higher risk because they are mistreated and stigmatized, may lack family support, and over half want mental health care but are unable to get it.” The Trevor Project 2023 report showed that LGBTQ young people who were physically threatened or harmed due to sexual orientation or gender identity reported triple the rate of attempting suicide than those who were not.

Through her writing, Ravyn hopes to increase awareness of at-risk youth. The Suicide Switch ebook is available to borrow from most public libraries and it can be found in print at all major distributors.
